COMPOSTING POLICY

The Michigan Department of Natural Resource and Environment enacted legislation in 2007 that determines options for managing yard waste on a large scale.  A key provision of this legislation is a requirement for composting facilities managing over 5,000 cubic yards of material annually to register with the DNRE.  For more information about the follow this link, compost legislation - 2007.

Other Michigan Legislation

In recent years, there have been a number of legislative proposals to exempt landfills from the yard waste ban.  The bills require exempted landfills to demonstrate the capacity to successfully capture a significant amount of the methane generated from the decomposition of organic materials in landfills.  The Michigan Recycling Coalition opposes the effort to exempt landfills from the yard waste ban for a number of reasons outlined in the documents below:
